I don’t remember how Room came to be on my reading list, but I am really glad it did. Probably one of the best books I have read in a long time. A little boy, Jack, believes that the world is as big as his room. As for 5 years he has known nothing but this room, his Mum and Old Nick. When Jack eventually leaves the room, after staging a death with his Mum his insights into how the world works are fascinating. I loved how he picked up on the fact that adults pretend to like children, but in point of fact prefer to drink coffee and talk to other adults. His curiosity and questioning of the “outside”, was moving.
I hadn’t realised there was a film adaptation until the acknowledgements section. Looking at the reviews and the fact the film won an Oscar shows that the film itself is just as good as the book. So often film adaptations are a let down to the novel. I know what I will be watching one night.
